Kidney stones types

Not all kidney stones are alike. In fact, there are four different kidney stones types that have different causes and different characteristics.

The most common type of kidney stones is made of calcium oxalate. This type makes up to 80 % of cases of kidney stones. These stones contain the extra amount of calcium that doesn't get evacuated with urine and that accumulates in the kidneys.

Anther less common type of kidney stones is what's called infection stones or struvite stones. These stones generally form as a result of a bacterial infection that happens in the urinary tract.

Uric acid stones form when the level of acidity in the urine is elevated. This condition is more common among people who suffer from gout and those who have some types of cancer. This kidney stones type is less common than the two other types mentioned above.

The less common of all kidney stones types are known as Cystine stones. The main constituant of these stones is cystine which is one of the building blocks of the nerves and muscles.
