Medical procedures for kidney stones removal

In order for a kidney stone to be flushed out with urine, it has to be crushed into smalled particles. And to break a kidney stone into smaller fragments, one of the following kidney stones removal procedures can be used.

1- In most cases, kidney stones are crushed using a procedure called Lithotripsy. In this procedure, the stones in the kidney are tageted with powerful shock wave that crush them into smaller particles that can get flushed with urine.

After undergoing this procedure for kidney stones removal, the patient can resume normal activity almost immediately.

2- The other treatment for kidney stones removal is called tunnel surgery or Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incison in the back of the patient and inserts a special insturment called the nephroscope in that incision to find the stone and extract it.

This procedure is generally used when the stone is too big or when it is in a locatin where it can't be effectively targetted with lithotripsy.

3- Finally, a kidney stone can also be crushed using a method called Ureteroscopic stone removal. This method is used when the stone gets blocked in the ureter.

The surgeon incerts a tube called the ureteroscope in the Urethra and moves it through the bladder to the ureter until it reaches to stone to crush it with a special type of shockwaves.
